Noob requires help

Hey All,
I just downloaded the emulator and the turtles game.
I run the game but when it gets to the select your turtle bit I cant choose any character. I cant move or select the highlighted one.
I have read about configuring the controls to Joystick 1 - Key-Set 3 etc. and done all that but I still cant select a turtle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
