Problems with controls using on laptop

I am having problems working out the controls. I have tried changing them in the options but this doesn't seem to work. The only games I can play are ones that are typing based. Space bar does fire, but in the keyboard config space isn't even set as an option. Also tried using a PS2 controller via adaptor but this doesn't work. Any help would be very much appreciated.
