Popping Sound and CPU Usage

Post by jonny1234 »

Hi,

I have just started to use CCS64 v3 Beta 1.3 on Windows 2000 SP4.

When I start it, I get a popping sound, and this happens also whenever I minimise or maximise the window, or if the window is activated or deactivated.

When this happens, the CPU usage briefly jumps to 100%.

I have also noticed that when I press F9 to go to the options screen, the CPU usage jumps to 100% and stays there until I exit the options screen.

I have selected Primary Sound Driver as the sound device.

I have the latest drivers for my Santa Cruz soundcard, the latest DirectX, and the latest drivers for my GeForce graphics card.

I don't get the popping sound with VICE. Perhaps that's because it has a customisable sound buffer size? I don't know.

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Jonny

The momentary popping noise when activating/de-activating the CCS64 task is normal, but popping should not occur after that. If so, you might want to upgrade your sound driver. However, the 100% CPU usage when in the F9 menu, is not normal. I didn't know there was an SP4 for Windows 2000 - perhaps therein lies the problem?

Works AOK for me with Windows ME.
Kind regards,

Thanks for your reply.

I did say I had the latest drivers for my soundcard, and I don't get popping in VICE or any application which uses DirectSound.

If the popping is normal in CCS64, then something should be done to remove it by using some sort of latency functionality.

But you could be right about Windows 2000 SP4 being the problem regarding the CPU usage. I think there may be a Microsoft hotfix for this, but you have to pay for it, and there's no way I'm doing that.

Looks like I'll have to wait for SP5.

Jonny

The popping noise only occurs due to task-switching in Windows. The popping should not occur in normal gameplay, otherwise your sound driver might not be best. I had this problem with the SB16 PCI sound card, but Creative Labs fixed it in a later version of their sound driver.
