Overwriting existing game saves in Elite?

Hi,

I've just found CCS64 and been experimenting with it using Elite. What a blast from the past!

I can save games using the original mechanism now and a blank d64 file but I have a problem.

If I try to save a game save using a new name for the commander then everything works well, however, if I try to save with the same name as previously (which is reasonable, since you want to keep the same commander name throughout), the scroll lock light keeps flashing for ever but doesn't appear to actually save the game position. I have lost a few saves now from this and experimented and confirmed that it is has real problems with overwriting an existing game save. It just reverts to what was in the game save the very first time it was written.

Am I doing something wrong?

Surely it should be possible to keep saving your game at subsequent points using the same commander name (e.g. SMITH), rather than having to fill up the d64 file with SMITH1, SMITH2, SMITH3, etc?

Or can't the 1541 drive cope with this? I only had the C2N back in the old days.

Thanks.

Ensure that you 1541 Saving option is set to Continuously.

Hi Stuart,

I tried that and it still didn't work. I've just resorted to saving them as "NAME1", "NAME2", etc just now.

Come to think of it, I wonder if it's because I didn't create the D64 file in CCS64. I can't remember what program I used now. One of the standalone PC tools I think.

I created the blank D64 for game saves before I realised it could be done from within CCS64.

I'll try it with a D64 file made from within CCS64 and see if that works.

Thanks

I have been playing Elite on CCS64 and have been saving my games using the Freeze feature. That way you can save the game anywhere, anytime you want.

Check the CCS64 documentation for all of the options, but I use:

F12 to freeze as filename "freeze.c64"
F11 to load "freeze .c64"

or

Alt-F12 to freeze as your own filename
Alt-F11 to load a freeze using your own filename.
