i got the game started by pressing SPACE BAR and M simultaneously.
i can also cast a spell with the use of the 2 keys, but can not move left,right etc.

I used this version to test it.
I think you need to set your joystick settings correctly. To do this, press Alt/I, set Control Port 1 to None, Control Port 2 to Joystick and Mode to Keyset 3.
You can use the cursor keys for moving around and the right Control key is the fire button.
