Getting PacMan and other joystick games to run

This was asked via PM:
I've just started downloading games, Chuckie Egg was the first, and it played fine. Then I downloaded Pacman but there were no instructions on which keys to use. Can you help?
You should be able to use an emulated joystick to play that game. Because the C64 has two joystick ports, one key set might not work, so try the other. The default keys for one joystick port are 8, 4, 6, and 2 on the number keypad, and the right Ctrl key for fire (used in PacMan as a pause button). The other joystick port uses /, 7, 9, and 5, and the right Alt key.

You may need to check the Input settings in the F9 menu to ensure that the joystick emulation uses "Keyset 1" and "Keyset 2". Sometimes the default is to use a PC joystick instead, and you will need to change that if you don't have a joystick hooked up to your PC.

This information also applies to all other games that use joystick input. Most of them use joystick port 2 for input, but some use port 1 instead, so if one keyset doesn't work, try the other. (Or, you can use the Alt-F10 shortcut to swap the keysets... But use the left Alt key instead of the right one, otherwise the joystick button can get stuck because of the swap.)

Hope this helps.

Hi Steven,

Thanks so much for your help, I am off to try it straight away. One last thing: how do I save the redefined keys on the Input thing? Or, how do I get back to the main menu once I've changed them to my preferred setting?

P.S. Well done for your website, I had a visit, and hope you find financial happiness soon!

Input settings are saved along with all the other settings when you exit CCS64. To return to the main menu from the Input menu (or any other submenu), you should be able to just press Esc: Once to get back to the Options menu, again to return to the main menu, and a third time to return to the emulation.
