PIRATES! Hangs after first sword fight

I am having a problem with Pirates! I have loaded the game and started a new career, I even master the sword fight at the beginning. I load Disk2 fine and the game goes to the next screen showing the towns I can go to and their direction but the window is in the lower right part of the screen and their are no controls. It is as if the game just "freezes" there.
I have pushed every button under the sun. What else can I do?
